DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN CONTEXT

Intimate-partner violence is common, consequential, and preventable.

1 in 3+

More than one in three U.S. women have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

16 million

Women who reported lifetime intimate-partner violence said it first happened before age 18.

1 in 5

About one in five homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner.

POWER & CONTROL

Abuse is often a pattern—not a single incident.

The Power and Control Wheel shows how intimidation, emotional abuse, isolation, minimizing and blaming, economic abuse, coercion, threats, and other tactics may work together to limit another person’s freedom and choices.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Respect leaves room for choice.

  • Boundaries and privacy are respected.
  • Decisions and responsibilities are shared.
  • Consent is freely given and can be withdrawn.
  • Both people can maintain friends, goals, work, and interests.
  • Conflict does not involve fear, threats, humiliation, or control.

HIV PREVENTION & SEXUAL HEALTH

Prevention is part of whole-person wellness.

Testing is the only way to know your HIV status. PrEP is medicine for people without HIV and, when taken as prescribed, reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%. PEP is emergency medication that must be started as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours after a possible exposure.

School of Women provides education and referrals. Testing, diagnosis, medication, and clinical care are provided by qualified healthcare partners.
