The Power of Setting Daily Intentions (and How to Do It)

A gentle five-minute practice for staying connected to your values, energy, and priorities.

DANIELLE DANIELS-YOUNG • UPDATED AUGUST 2026 • 4 MIN READ

How often do you start your day without checking in with yourself? Maybe you move straight into work, responsibilities, and everyone else’s needs before considering your own.

A daily intention creates a brief pause before the day begins. It asks: How do I want to show up today? What deserves my energy? What do I want to remember when the day becomes busy?

What does it mean to set an intention?

An intention is a commitment to yourself. Unlike a goal, it is not necessarily something to measure or complete. It is a quality you want to embody and a guide for the choices you make.

  • A reminder of what matters most
  • A guide when decisions or distractions arise
  • A way to name the energy you want to bring into the day
  • A practice that helps you remain present

Why daily intentions matter

Change begins with awareness and intentional action. Goals can point toward a destination, but intentions help shape the mindset and daily choices that carry you there.

An intention is not another demand to place on yourself. It is a gentle reminder of what you value and how you want to respond.

A simple morning practice

Write this sentence in your journal, planner, or phone: Today, I intend to _____. Then ask why that intention matters to you.

  • What kind of person do I want to be today?
  • What attitude do I want to bring to other people?
  • What do I need to protect or prioritize?
  • What will help me move toward a meaningful goal?

Intentions you can borrow

  • Be present in the moment
  • Trust my intuition
  • Prioritize what matters most
  • Stay focused without being harsh with myself
  • Welcome new possibilities
  • Respond with courage and care
  • Make room for rest
  • Embrace change without abandoning myself

Keep your intention visible

Place it where you will see it, set a quiet phone reminder, repeat it during a short breathing pause, or reflect on it at the end of the day. If you lost sight of it, begin again tomorrow without judgment.

What intention will you set for yourself today?
